Hi. Ya'll have done some awesome research. I wanted to suggest a possibility. My great-grandmother was Marie Cecile Becnel, b.03-04-1874, in Vacherie. Like many people in our family, we were told that Becnel is a German name, but it was my great-grandmother who said it. I wonder if the Becnel's who came to America may have claimed that heritage to avoid problems with the locals.
The English weren't popular, and it might have been easier to say they were German with so many other German families close by. It may also have kept them safer through events like the battle of New Orleans. Thanks for posting so much interesting work. I printed a copy and brought it to my grandfather. He was really excited to read this. We have always wondered about our origins.

Mary Tucker
