Kim, there are two probabilities:

1. After the Civil War,Blacks were allowed to vote but were required to have a last name. Some already had surnames that were either the name of the property owner or the name of the father. Some chose their own last name after the war.
or
2. Black children were fathered by a Becnel

There is at least one group of Black Becnels living in California and several in Louisiana.
I think that your best shot would be to go back as far as you can in the baptismal records where the parent is listed. When you get back to pre-civil war records, I could probably help you some. I am haphazard at best lately with reading my e-mail, so please be patient and put BECNEL in the subject line.
I believe that I sent you some information that I had from my files a while back. Did you receive any of it?
