I am the editor of “Klatrefører for Jotunheimen” (Climbing Guide to Jotunheimen), published by Norsk Tindeklub (Norwegian Alpine Club). As part of the preparations for next issue I have started some investigations to make the new guidebook even more accurate. Raymond Percy Bicknell (1875-1927) was the first to climb the North West Ridge of Store Midtmaradalstind in 1897. This is documented (by Raymond P. Bicknell) both in the 1898 yearbook of Den Norske Turistforening (The Norwegian Trekking Association) and in Alpine Journal vol. 34. In the DNT book he writes that C.C. Bicknell accompanied him (together with the Norwegian guide Ola Berge); in Alpine Journal he refers to his rope mate as “my brother”. I would appreciate if somebody could tell me which names are hidden behind C.C., and, if possible, give me a brief description of C.C. Bicknell’s climbing career. Raymond P. Bicknell is referred to also in other parts of Klatrefører for Jotunheimen: He participated in the first complete traverse of the Dyrhaug Ridge in 1895, and he made the first ascent of Maradalsskaret (the col between the summits Mannen and Kjerringa) from the Maradal Glacier in 1911. But on these two occasions his brother C.C. did not participate. Kind regards, Fridtjof Thokle Madssen e-mail address: tmadssen@online.no Phone: +47 91737357 Notify Administrator about this message?
